THE MYCELIA PROJECT is an innovative and educational collaboration that seeks to unite various communities through hands-on, experiential projects that promote learning focused on food, soil, water, and energy sustainability.The MYCELIA Project uses an innovative, connected learning approach to engage students in STEAM (Science Techology, Engineering, Art/Agriculture, Math) disciplines, powered by interest, and linked to current challenges within their communities. Aquaponics, a soil-less and water conserving form of agriculture, uses constructed recirculating ecosystems where bacteria converts fish waste to plant nutrients. Aquaponics integrates the whole spectrum of STEAM disciplines- from the biology of the fish and plants, and the technology used in maintaining the systems, to the chemistry of the water, and the engineering and math used to design systems. The MYCELIA Project elevates this experience by integrating STEAM into a broader interdisciplinary context to include discussion and examination of topics like industrialization, food security, urban planning, art & design, sustainability, and the local food movement.
